Pink-Based Galaxy Red Tiger | Red Wasp

The Pink-Based Galaxy Red Tiger — the Red Wasp — is the red counterpart to our Hornet lineage. The body is red and never changes; the white tiger bands wrapping it take on a pink tone, which is what “pink based” means in the hobby name, and it is a hard tone to stabilise. Bred here using 100% true Red Wasp males.

About the photo. The shrimp pictured is High or Collector grade. We ship unsexed juveniles — treat the photo as the target, not the arrival. The band count is already set at that size; shell, pink tone and leg colour all fill in as they grow. Adults are available on request.

What to expect as they mature:

• Tiger bands: White bands wrapping the abdomen. A few spots on the cheeks are normal; this line is about the bands, not head spots.
• Shell thickens: Juveniles have thinner shells. With each moult the shell builds density — a thick shell looks shiny and solid, a thin one dull with see-through patches — and a thick shell is one of the markers of a Collector-grade adult.
• Pink tone builds: The red body never changes. The white bands start pale and the pink tone on them deepens with each moult as the shrimp matures. It builds over time; it is not fixed at birth.
• Spider legs: The body pattern carried onto the legs — red patches with white, the same as the body. The white on the legs takes on the pink tone too, but it is small and subtle. Leg colour follows the shell, so the higher grades show it first, and it fills in with age on every grade.
• Purple sheen: A metallic purple over the red that shows most on the higher grades and in a tank whose water has aged — an older tank with fewer water changes and very stable water. It comes and goes with moults and conditions; that is normal.

Every shrimp arrives pale from the trip and colours back up within hours to a few days.

A Red Wasp is graded exactly like the Hornet, over a red base instead of black. The pattern is already set at the size we ship; it shifts a little with age, but not by much.

• Tiger bands — the number and neatness of the white bands around the body. Entry 1–3 bands, Mid 2–3, High 3–4, Collector 4–5, and the higher the grade the cleaner each band.
• Colour — the red base stays as it is. What is graded is the depth of the pink on the white bands, and the metallic purple sheen over the red. Both show more on the higher grades.
• Shell thickness — Entry and Mid usually carry a thinner shell; High and Collector a dense, solid one.
• Leg colour — grows in with age on every grade, but High and Collector already show strong spider legs at the size we ship. Entry and Mid are hit and miss, and may never fill the legs completely.

Red-based tigers, by their nature, run a little below black-based ones for shell thickness and colour. So a Red Wasp of any grade will sit a notch under the same grade of Hornet. That is the difference between the two lines, and the grades within this line are judged against each other, not against the Hornet.

This line is offered in Entry, Mid, High and Collector grades. Every shrimp ships from the same true Red Wasp stock; the higher grades simply carry more bands, more colour and a thicker shell already.

Grading is done by eye at shipping size, on what the shrimp shows then. Shrimp rarely move a grade as they grow, but water matters: poor water costs colour and shell.
