Description
Lava rock is a light, porous volcanic rock. The porosity is the useful part: its sponge-like structure holds an enormous internal surface, which gives the beneficial bacteria that turn ammonia into less harmful compounds somewhere to live, so it works as biological filter media as well as hardscape. It is generally inert and does not alter hardness or pH. Mosses and epiphyte plants (plants that attach to surfaces) grip its rough surface well.

Usage & Instructions
Rinse thoroughly under running water until it runs clear, then soak for a day and rinse again; it is very dusty from the bag. Boiling for 15 to 20 minutes cleans it further. File off the sharpest points before placing.
Risk & Awareness
Lava rock has sharp, abrasive edges that can injure bottom-dwelling or long-finned fish and can scratch acrylic. Volcanic dust clouds water if the rock is not rinsed. Its pores trap detritus and are hard to clean of algae once in place. Some red lava is iron-rich; if you are unsure of a piece's origin, test water readings after adding it.
