Description
A terracotta shelter is a plain, unglazed fired-clay hide. It does the same job as a ceramic cave: somewhere enclosed to retreat after moulting, the shedding of the old shell, when the new shell is soft for a day or more, or when startled. There is no coating or glaze to worry about, and unglazed clay grows biofilm, the microbe layer shrimp graze on, so the outside becomes a feeding surface. Small fish and snails use it too.

Usage & Instructions
Rinse well; new terracotta can hold clay dust. Soaking it first helps it stop trapping air. Half-bury it in the substrate or wedge it against hardscape so it does not roll, and position the opening away from strong flow. Moss attaches readily if you want to cover it.
Risk & Awareness
Terracotta is porous and can carry salts or chemicals from earlier use, so use only new, aquarium-sold pieces, never garden pots that may have held fertiliser. Check the opening size against the largest fish in the tank so nothing gets stuck. Broken terracotta has sharp edges.
